4/10/08- Now that I have a little more room, I thought it might be interesting to follow Brennan's progress this offseason.  Brennan is currently playing with the Iowa Barnstormers.  It is an AAU team.  He is on the Iowa Barnstormers Black Team.  Below is a link to the Barnstormers web site.

Iowa Barnstormers Link

The Barnstormers have played in 2 tournaments already.  Over Easter Weekend they went to Las Vegas.  They finished with a 4-1 record and were one of the top 8 teams in a field of 64 teams.  They just finished 2nd place at the Iowa AAU 19U State Tournament which was held April 5-6.  Cougill was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Of note, on the Barnstormers site, it lists former Hawkeye Players Duez Henderson and Jason Price as coaches of the teams.

I currently do not have stats for these AAU games and tournaments.  If I find more I will post.  I will keep their current schedule at the bottom of this page and attempt to update when available.

04/15/08-I have gathered some more information on the upcoming Real Deal on the Hill tournament.

Some of the names that will be at the tournament are below, courtesey of "The Recruiting Guy" who has an Arkansas blog. (Recruiting Guy Link)

Players Class of 2009

Lance Stephenson        Derrick Favors        DeMarcus Cousins        Shawn Kemp, Jr

Kenny Boynton             Shawn Williams       Nolan Dennis

Players Class of 2010

Trae Golden                Joshua Smith             Jeremy Tyler

Players Class of 2011

Anthony Wroten, Jr       LaQuinton Ross        DeShawn Thomas

Here is the link to the Real Deal on the Hill website.

Some of the past players that have played in the Real Deal on the Hill can be found here.

The Barnstormers Black team are in Pool C.  They play their first game Friday against Team Breakdown at 6:40pm.  Team Breakdown is from Florida and feature recruit Kenny Boynton.  Boynton is ranked as the #3 SG in the Class of 2009 by both Rivals and Scout.

Their next matchup is Saturday against the Juice Allstars/Raising Champions at 11:30am.  Then they play again Saturday against the Tulsa Jammers at 1:50pm.

The Juice Allstars/Raising Champions team features Lance Stephenson, who according to Scout is the #1 SF in the Class of 2009.  Rivals has him as the #2 SG in the Class of 2009.

I currently have no information on the Tulsa Jammers.

If Cougill and the Barnstormers can get 1st or 2nd in their Pool, then they will play the 1st and 2nd place teams in Pool N.  Pool N teams are the Illinois Warriors, King James Shooting Stars, All Iowa Attack, and Birmingham Ice.

The other Barnstormers team is in the tournament along with the Iowa Triple Threat, and All Iowa Attack teams.

Looking at the Pools and looking at player profiles from Scout and Rivals, here are some other players to note that may be playing in the tournament.  (Hence, I looked at the teams in the Pools and matched them to the AAU teams listed on the Scout and Rivals players profiles.  However, this does not mean the players listed below are actually going to be playing in the tournament, just an educated guess.)

Shaunessy Smith.  Smith currently has an offer from Iowa and plays for the Birmingham Storm.

Wisconsin recruit Mike Bruesewitz plays for the 43Hoops team (Anthony Tucker played with them last year).

Nick Russell plays for the Dallas Mustangs, and currently has an offer from Iowa.

Harrison Barnes plays for the All Iowa Attack 16U team.  Barnes also has an offer from Iowa.

This Tournament is a D1 live period tournament, so keep your eyes peeled and ears open for any Coach Lickliter sightings.

By the way, Spring signing period starts tommorow.

04/15/08-Found an article from the Las Vegas Easter Classic.  It's a Van Coleman link which is here.

Cougill scored 26 points vs Houston Hoops in a 78-70 loss in a quaterfinal match.  Here's a nice snipit from the article "But the Iowa squad wouldn't go away, as they chipped away at Houston's lead behind the stellar post play of Brennan Cougill to close to six points 67-61 with 3:57 to play. "

Houston Hoops features Keith "Tiny" Gallon, the #4 Center in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals.  "Tiny" Gallon is 6'8''  290lbs.

If you want, you can order DVD's of the Iowa Barnstormers games from the Las Vegas Easter Classic.  They are priced at $5.00 each and are available on HoopTV.net.  Here is the Link.

04/19/08- Cougill and the Barnstormers Black team lose their first game at the Real Deal on the Hill Tournament.  Team Breakdown beat them 70-56.  Will post more when info available.

Found a quick reference on Cougills first game of the tournament.  From Rivals.com

" Iowa commitment Brennan Cougill looks a lot better physically than he did last year. He's thinner, more nimble and his post moves are getting better and better. Looks like a typical case of dropped pounds and added production. "    Link: Rivals.com Link

04/19/08-Cougill and the Barnstormers Black team lose their second game 83-61 against the Raising Champions team.

04/23/08-Cougill and the Iowa Barnstormers Black team finish 0-4 in the Real Deal on the Hill Tournament.  They next play on 04/25/08 in the Schoolers Invitaional.  It also is a "live" event, so keep your eyes open for any sightings of Coach Lickliter and Co.  I will post more about the Tournament when information is available.

I just realized I did not post that Cougill will also be participating at the Reebok All-American Camp.  It starts July 6 and will be held in Philidelphia.  Below is an overview of the camp that was posted on barnstormersbasketball.com

Going Camping...

University of Iowa commitment Brennan Cougill (Bishop Heelan, 2009) has landed invitations to both the NBA Players Association’s Top 100 Camp in June and the Reebok All-American Camp in July.  The NBPA Top 100 Camp features instruction by current and former NBA stars to work with and advise all campers on how they can make their basketball goals a reality by teaching NBA moves and training techniques. The Reebok All-American Camp provides a setting for many of the nations top prospects to endure intense skill development sessions and competitive team match-ups under the watchful eye of every major college program, scouting service and national media outlet that covers prep basketball in the country. Congrats, Brennan!

Also of note, Cougill originally stated he would participate in the Prime Time League this summer.  However, due to his busy summer schedule, he has stated that he will NOT participate.  Prime Time League is a summer basketball League that takes place in North Liberty, Iowa.  It features Iowa Hawkeye players both past and present.  It is free admission event.  I have been to them before and they are great to go to.  Here is the link to the PTL site:  PTL link

07/12/08- Sorry for the delay in updates.  Sounds like Cougill had a decent showing at the NBA Top 100 camp.

Back on June 26-28 Cougill was back with the Barnstormers in the Dakota Showcase.  Cougill impressed and made the All-Tournament team.

misterbasketball.com  did an amazing job giving the public access to the Dakota Showcase stats.

Cougill averaged 19.7 points per game in a total of 6 games played.  His high mark for points in one game was 24 against the Minnesota Magic.  Brennan scored a total of 118 in the 6 games.

Here is a direct link to all of the "box scores" for the Barnstormers- Barnstormers "Box Scores" Link      I use the term "box scores" loosely because it is maily points scored box.

The Barnstormers finished with a 4-1 record.

Cougill then headed to the Reebok All-American Camp.

Browsing the web, I found some information on how Cougill did.

NBE Basketball Report had this to say about Brennan:

"Brennan Cougill During most summer basketball games, back-to-the-basket centers do not get many chances to really show their post moves and scoring ability down low. However, Cougill was an exception. His team made an effort to get him as many touches as possible in the paint, and he took advantage of it. He had a variety of post moves and dominated offensively. The 6-foot-9 Iowa commit gets great position and can finish easily. He is a decent athlete and rebounds the ball well."

According to the blog Prep Champs, Cougill was wearing number 74 on the numerical roster and played for the Talkin' Krazy Blue Team.

They listed him as 6'9''  265lbs.

Using the Prep Champs Link Stats can be found by clicking on the game links for the Talkin' Krazy team.  Again, Cougill was number 74.

This was from a USA Today blog:  Link

In it Cougill has this to say, ""I have to adjust to the speed and the athleticism of the players here," Cougill said. "It took a little longer this time. I need to work on my speed and agility and my explosiveness."

In the same blog, they mention he was one of the best rebounders at the camp.

SlamOnline.com also gives a report on how Cougill did.  Here it is:

"Brennan Cougill, 6-9 post, Heelan (IA), 2009: Cougill’s rugged post moves, soft hands, nice touch, ferocity on the boards and wide frame were all impressive, but the fact that he knew his limitations was even better."

Sounds as if Brennan is having a productive summer so far.

No results yet how the Barnstormers faired at the Hoosier Shootout without Brennan.

Next up is the AAU Super Showcase in Orlando.

07/17/08- New update.  Cougill and the Barnstormers just finished playing in the Honda Classic in Shawnee Mission, KS.

Thanks to an e-mail from a Brennan Cougill fan, I was able to catch this one.  I originally did not know about the Honda Classic.  According to the fan, Cougill and the Barnstormers had made it to the Final 4.

They beat the MO-KAN Elite team in the quarters by 16 points.  The MO-KAN team had won the Manhattan Classic.  Sounds like a huge win for the Barnstormers.  Will post more information when available.

08/27/08- Cougill and the Barnstormers finished up 4-1 at the Honda Classic.  They then traveled to Orlando to the AAU Supershowcase, and came out with a 4-1 record.

Finishing up the summer, Cougill and the 'Stormers went to Kansas City, KS and came away with the Championship at the Powerade Tournament.  Congrats to Brennan and the Barnstormers Black team!!!!

They ended the summer with a 46-15 record.

It has been great tracking Brennan throughout the summer.  Sounds like he continues to gain valuable experience.  Too bad I could not find more information as to how his skills are doing, but from what I have heard sounds as though Brennan is progressing.

I look forward to following him and the Crusaders this coming Basketball season.
